The Woodblock Process

Loughridge Portrait

I love the woodblock print process. There is something wonderful about taking an original plein-aire sketch, direct and invigorating encounter with the subject, and  creating a print in the studio using a slow and methodical process.

The challenge of translating a sketch into a block print is to capture the energy of the original. Handling the technical aspects of relief printing with knowledge and confidence allows an artist to treat them as expressive tools and creating the woodblock becomes as invigorating as the original sketch was to create.
